After we’ve had to adore the turbocharged Skyline GT-R from afar for nearly two decades, Nissan is officially selling its game-changing super coupe on U.S. shores for the first time. In a late night ceremony at a Universal City, California dealership, Daryl Alison took delivery of the very first GT-R sold Stateside – by the automaker. The event included all the pomp and circumstance you’d expect, including an appearance by notorious hot-shoe, Steve Millen. Alison, a long-time Nissan fan whose garage has housed a number of sports cars, including several 350Zs, was grinning from ear-to-ear while he got a rundown on this black GT-R in Premium trim. Not surprisingly, Alison paid sticker price ($72,900) for his GT-R, likely to be the first and last to do so as owners begin taking delivery of their own GT-Rs in the following weeks.

PRESS RELEASE

LOS ANGELES (July 7, 2008) – Nissan North America, Inc. saved a few fireworks for the morning after the Independence Day holiday, delivering the first Nissan GT-R supercar in the United States at 12:01 a.m. PDT today to a Southern California customer.

The exotic, all-new 2009 Nissan GT-R, long coveted by American buyers who previously could experience the legendary GT-R only through video games, officially goes on sale today at a select number of GT-R Certified Nissan dealers across the country. Daryl Alison of Costa Mesa, Calif., one of the first customers to order a new GT-R through a pre-sale program launched last January, couldn’t wait for normal business hours to take possession of his new Black Obsidian GT-R Premium model. Through special arrangement with Universal City Nissan, Los Angeles, Alison was handed the keys by dealer representative Mike Sage moments after midnight.

“I’ve followed the history of the GT-R since inception and, after years of anticipation, it’s great to see the ‘Godzilla of supercars’ finally coming to the U.S.,” said Alison. “I’ve owned a number of Nissan 350Z sports cars and other exotics and muscle cars, but more than any other vehicle I can’t wait to get this new GT-R out on the road. Now it’s America’s time to get in and play.”

More than 1,700 of the exotic 480-horsepower Nissan GT-R supercars, or approximately 70 percent of the first year allocation for the United States market, have already been spoken for, with deliveries of those initial orders expected to continue throughout the coming months.

Joining the midnight delivery ceremony was Steve Millen, long-time Nissan race driver and the winningest driver in IMSA GT race series history. Millen recently participated in high-performance racetrack test sessions in the Nissan GT-R for a leading automotive enthusiast magazine and has assisted with GT-R dealer orientation and training programs.

The GT-R is available only through officially certified Nissan dealers that have met a number of strict sales, service and facilities commitments, including dedicating a master technician to GT-R service. A searchable listing of the GT-R Certified Nissan dealers is available to consumers on nissanusa.com. The 2009 Nissan GT-R has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP)* of $69,850 for the GT-R and $71,900 for the GT-R Premium model.

The 2009 Nissan GT-R features a 3.8-liter twin turbo V6 producing 480 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, backed by an all-new, paddle-shifted, dual clutch sequential 6-speed rear transaxle. It features the use of a world’s first independent rear transaxle ATTESA E-TS all-wheel drive system, which places the transmission, transfer case and final drive at the rear of the vehicle, optimizing weight distribution and maximizing handling capability.

The Nissan GT-R’s hybrid body construction combines steel, carbon fiber and die-cast aluminum and has a low coefficient of drag of 0.27, while achieving high front and rear downforce. GT-R’s four-passenger cabin features a sloping “aero blade canopy” roofline and curved C-pillar “sword edge,” as well as GT-R’s hallmark four-ring taillights, functional rear carbon fiber underbody diffuser, rear spoiler and large, integrated quad exhaust tips. Inside, GT-R’s interior includes sculpted performance bucket seats for an optimal driving position, a cockpit-style instrument panel with a large center-mounted tachometer and a multi-function display – which includes mechanical and driving information, as well as an on-board driving recorder.

YOKOHAMA, Japan, June 25 (Reuters) - Nissan Motor Co (nasdaq: NSANY - news - people ) chief executive Carlos Ghosn said that industrywide sales in the United States could fall well below 15 million vehicles this year and that he expected steel firms to launch another round of price hike talks.

Ghosn also told a news conference after the company’s annual shareholders’ meeting that the carmaker would likely raise prices in Japan to offset a surge in the price of steel and other raw materials.

Nissan and other car makers are grappling with a weak U.S. market, where many analysts have also predicted sales would fall below 15 million units this year as high gasoline prices and a sluggish economy cut into demand.

“If we take the trend of the market in May and June it looks like we are going to be much below 15 million. Now I’m not sure if this is going to continue for the rest of year,” Ghosn said. “We are preparing ourselves for the worst.”

Ghosn said he expected Nissan’s U.S. market share to rise, however, thanks to its full line-up of models including fuel-efficient cars.

Nissan and other Japanese automakers are expecting profits to fall sharply this year, largely because they have to pay more for steel as suppliers such as Nippon Steel (other-otc: NISTF.PK - news - people ) look to pass on the rising costs of freight, coal and iron ore.

Ghosn, who is also chief executive at top Nissan shareholder Renault (other-otc: RNSDY.PK - news - people ) said he expected steelmakers to initiate another round of price hike talks.

“And if it’s not going to happen in 2008, it’s going to come in 2009, and it’s going to be messy,” he said.

Shares of Nissan gained 0.2 percent to end the day at 899 yen, while the benchmark Nikkei average fell 0.1 percent.

Ghosn also said he expected another round of steel price talks. (Reporting by Nobuhiro Kubo and Nathan Layne; Editing by Hugh Lawson)

CASCAIS, Portugal — At a drive session in Portugal in May, Nissan showed journalists the ultimate teaser. As we entered a design presentation and reception, two full-size side profile motifs protruding out of opposite walls in the auditorium, and hidden behind white sheets, pointed to not just one, but two new sport coupes — the new Z car, but also a baby Infiniti coupe based on the Z.

As we probed one Nissan source for answers, we learned that while the new Z will land in showrooms in 2009, the Infiniti coupe will “turn up in concept car form at a motor show within the next year.” And this new Infiniti will sit on the same platform as that employed by the Z. That’s all Nissan would give away.

Whether the new coupe will debut at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show or the Geneva show in March, given that Infiniti has just launched in Europe, is unknown. But one thing we did confirm is that we will see the coupe on North American streets by late 2010, and in European showrooms soon after that.

From what we could gather, the new baby Infiniti two-door will rival the BMW Z4 and Porsche Cayman for size and will be a rear-wheel drive two-seater hardtop. But unlike its hard-core Nissan Z brother, the Infiniti will lean more toward the luxury end of the scale, with a softer ride and more leather.

Expect a 2.5-liter V6 for this coupe, which will be the smallest model in the Infiniti range.

What this means to you: Expect to learn more in the coming year as the future Infiniti gets closer to launch.

Nissan expects buzz to carry GT-R for two years before the hard-core Spec V with potentially 550 hp debuts in the U.S.

BY ALISA PRIDDLE, PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEFFERY G. RUSSELL, KGP PHOTOGRAPHY, AND THE MANUFACTURER
June 2008

Here in the U.S., the hype continues to build in anticipation of the July on-sale date of the 2009 Nissan GT-R. But in Japan, where the car has been on sale since December 2007, it is the Spec V—on sale this December—that has buyers excited.

In North America, be prepared to wait a couple model years for the performance Spec V, which will be lighter, faster, and pricier than the conventional sports car. We expect to learn more of the specifics at the 2008 Paris auto show in September, but heavy use of carbon fiber coupled with some decontenting reportedly will shed anywhere from 220 to 330 pounds. Visually, the Spec V has a new front splitter and tweaked rear spoiler. A modified suspension sits in between, and the car has distinctive spoke wheels.

Larry Dominique, Nissan North America vice president in charge of product planning, says he wants to see how the regular GT-R plays out and save the Spec V for when the buzz dies down and demand starts to fall off.

With sports cars, that can start as early as the second model year. But the GT-R is somewhat of an exception given its legendary status and limited volumes. The U.S. allotment is an average of 1500 GT-Rs a year for five years, but Nissan is skewing production higher in the first year, to 2400 units. Dominique suspects the U.S. may need 2400 in the second year as well. The third model year is when the numbers are expected to drop off and the Spec V will make its timely entrance as a 2011 model.

Nissan wants to strategically introduce the Spec V to keep the GT-R fresh, Dominique says. The automaker also needs time to educate U.S. buyers on the GT-R itself. While this is the seventh generation of the Japanese icon, it is the first to be sold in the U.S.

Volumes for the Spec V will be even smaller than the limited run for the GT-R. And if customers are clamoring for the higher-performance version from day one, Dominique says he is fine with years of anticipation.

Initial rumors had the Spec V lapping the grueling Nürburgring in 7 minutes and 25 seconds, but with a base production GT-R (480-hp, twin-turbo 3.8-liter V-6) on regular tires making the loop in 7 minutes and 29 seconds, we probably need to rethink the Spec V figures as its engine will be tweaked to pump out horsepower somewhere in the 512 to 550 range.

Nissan execs tell us the GT-R itself is not a money-maker for the company, but as more products share its unique platform, it will be.

In addition to the Spec V, the platform will yield products for Infiniti, Nissan’s luxury brand. We likely will get our first glimpse of what’s to come with a new full-size Infiniti concept slated to be unveiled in less than a year. It will reflect the brand’s new design language for the second generation of Infiniti products. And, presumably, it fills the division’s need for a flagship as Nissan continues to roll out its luxury brand globally and aims to make it a true tier-one luxury marque.

From Leftlanenews.com:

The all-new Nissan 370Z is still a good six months away from an official reveal, but thanks to our illustration and now a shot of the car from a presentation, we shouldn’t be too surprised when the car finally takes its place on the Nissan stand. As previously speculated, the newest Z will receive a headlight treatment similar to the design seen on the 2009 Maxima.

Overall, the 370Z — which is being developed under the code name C53D — appears to keep the same general shape as the current 350Z. However, the front headlights — which will reportedly use LEDs — are much more dramatic than the current car’s and can be clearly seen in our illustration and the leaked image. The rear also seems to be a bit stubbier, with a sharper crease along the trailing edge of the hatch.

The 370Z is expected to use the same VQ37VHR powerplant found in the Infiniti G37 — a V6 displacing 3.7L — delivering at least 330 horsepower.

In December of 2006, Nissan product planning VP Larry Dominique said the next-generation Z would “have considerably more performance than the current model and give a visual stimulus beyond today’s Z.” He said it would continue to deliver on the promise of being attainable to a wide range of people.

Expect to see the all-new Z at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show in November.

Endless has released two new suspension kits for the Nissan R35 GT-R this month. Available in steel body (Function-T) and aluminum body (Function-A) types. The kits have a variety of options such as 6 adjustment points vs. 30 adjustment points and multiple coil types. Each kit is made to order to each customer’s specifications and all Zeal Function-T and Function-A kits offer full height and damper adjustability.

Prices start at 255,000 yen ($2,500 USD) for the Function-T kit including X-Coil springs and 6 way damper adjustment. 297,950 yen ($2900 USD) will get you in a set of the base model 30 way adjustable function-T sets.

For the function-A expect to pay from 311,850 yen ($3,100 USD) and up but what you get is a lighter weight suspension component and we all know who could do with a little less weight.
