About Us

Who We Are

Some obsessions begin slowly. Ours began on a motor show floor in Tokyo in October 2005, when Nissan pulled the covers off something that stopped every conversation in the hall. The GT-R Proto wasn’t just a concept car. It was a statement. And a small group of us — sitting in front of different screens on different continents, studying every grainy photo and shaky video clip we could track down — felt something click into place that never quite clicked back out.

We are nissangtrproto.com. A small team of lifelong GT-R enthusiasts who’ve spent years building what we always wished existed: a real, thorough, honest archive dedicated to the 2005 GT-R Proto and its living influence on every R35 GT-R ever produced. Not a listing site. Not a review aggregator. Just pure, unfiltered passion for one of the greatest automotive engineering stories ever told.

Our Obsession with the GT-R Proto

We’ve spent years digging through original Tokyo Motor Show photography, period interviews with Kazutoshi Mizuno and Shiro Nakamura’s design team, factory engineering details, and more forum threads than any reasonable person should admit to. What keeps us coming back is something simple: the GT-R Proto is one of the most honest concept cars ever built. It wasn’t theater. It was a blueprint.

When Nissan walked that car onto the stage in 2005, they weren’t showing the world a fantasy. They were showing a commitment. And when the production R35 arrived in December 2007, it honored that commitment in a way that still gives us chills. The engineering decisions made during the Proto’s development phase — the rear-mounted GR6 transaxle, the takumi-assembled VR38DETT, the purpose-built chassis, the ATTESA AWD calibration — are still running in every R35 on the road today. That unbroken connection is what this site exists to document and celebrate.

What You’ll Find Here

This site is organized around everything the GT-R Proto touches — history, design, engineering, and real-world ownership.

  • History Archive: Deep-dive articles on the Proto’s development history, its Tokyo Motor Show debut, and the engineering decisions that shaped the R35 we know today.
  • Design Analysis: We study the Proto’s design secrets — the aero details, the lighting lineage, the stance philosophy — with the same attention a chassis engineer would give the car itself.
  • Proto vs. Production Comparisons: Side-by-side looks at what changed from show floor to showroom, and exactly why each decision was made.
  • Ownership Guides: Honest, experience-backed guides for people who own or are considering a used R35, written by people who’ve lived with these cars for years.

What makes this site different isn’t volume. It’s depth. Every article here comes from genuine study, real ownership experience, and a refusal to publish anything we wouldn’t want to read ourselves. No filler. No recycled spec sheets. Just real knowledge.

Our Los Angeles Roots

We’re based in Los Angeles, and the West Coast GT-R community has shaped how we think about these cars in ways we couldn’t have predicted when we started. LA has one of the most technically serious and genuinely passionate GT-R owner scenes in North America. We’ve been at the weekend meets. We’ve been on the canyon roads at stupid o’clock. We’ve had the parking lot conversations that somehow turned into two-hour engineering breakdowns over cold coffee.

That community — its collective knowledge, its honesty, and its deep love for the GT-R platform — is woven into everything we publish here. This site wasn’t built in isolation. It was built from real conversations with real owners who care deeply about getting things right.

Our Philosophy

We believe something straightforward: the GT-R Proto’s real story — the engineering decisions, the design philosophy, the development challenges, and the production outcomes — deserves to be documented properly and made accessible to anyone who cares about it.

That means no fluff, no padding, and no content that exists just to fill a page. Every article on this site is written with the goal of adding something genuinely useful to the permanent record of what the GT-R Proto is, what it created, and why it still matters in 2026. We share honest knowledge freely, because that’s what every genuine enthusiast deserves. And because the car — and the people who built it — earned nothing less.
