Used R35 GT-R Corrosion: Underbody Buying Checks
A used R35 GT-R can have an immaculate upper body while its underside needs closer attention. Coastal exposure, salted roads, storage and past repairs can all be relevant, but location alone is not a condition verdict. Ask for an underbody inspection that describes what is affected and how seriously, rather than relying on a few dark photographs labelled clean.

Obtain useful access and photographs
Have a competent workshop lift and inspect the car using the appropriate procedure. Request clear images of the areas examined, with enough context to identify their location. Covers can conceal parts of the underside; any further access should be handled by the workshop with the owner's agreement. A buyer should not crawl under an unsupported car to improve a sales photograph.
Distinguish appearance from significance
Ask the inspector to identify which surfaces, fasteners, lines, mounts or components are affected and whether the concern is cosmetic, service-related or structural. Do not diagnose severity from colour alone. A written explanation is more useful than a seller's reassurance that all cars from the region look like this. Areas requiring specialist assessment should remain unresolved findings until that work is completed.

Investigate fresh coatings and repair history
Protective coatings can be legitimate maintenance, but a recent application is not proof that corrosion underneath was treated correctly. Ask for the product used, preparation records and photographs before application if available. Link any repair invoices to the relevant areas of the car. If the coating prevents the inspector from assessing condition, record that limitation rather than converting it into a clean bill of health.
Price an actual repair plan or reject uncertainty
Obtain a qualified repair assessment for material findings, including access and component replacement where needed. Compare the corrected cost with a better-documented car. Where structural condition or repair acceptability remains uncertain, pause or reject the purchase rather than choosing an arbitrary discount. Reinspection after agreed work should document the completed result, not simply show a freshly darkened underside.
What to request before agreeing the purchase
- Well-lit, location-labelled underbody inspection photographs.
- Written assessment of severity and inspection limitations.
- Evidence before coatings and a qualified plan for material repairs.

The buying decision
A credible report can separate minor age-related appearance from a purchase-changing concern. Make the decision from that evidence. Neither a coastal address nor a fresh protective finish is a substitute for understanding the metal and components underneath.
Questions buyers ask
Does visible surface rust automatically make the car unsuitable?
No. Location, extent and component significance require competent assessment.
Does new underseal prove the underside is sound?
No. Ask what was present before application and whether the inspection could assess the underlying condition.
